What is Impact Portrait Photography?
Put simply, an impact portrait is a contrived image of a person, specifically designed to deliver a punch. They can come in many forms, but what they have in common is that they all have something that sets them apart from the simple mobile snap of a moment.
Impact portraits are manufactured from a visual concept, they are images made, not pictures taken. It could be the lighting and shadow, the negative space, the scene or a physical or metaphorical juxtaposition. It could be the hair or makeup, the clothes and accessories. It could be the attitude of the subject, the dynamism and movement captured in the split second, or the 'something' of the individual being photographed that they bring of themselves, perhaps the artist, dancer or musician in them. It could be any or all of these, and more typically it's a combination, but whatever it is, it lifts an image from the typical.
Graham's style is to strip the portrait down to its essentials, with plain or diminished backgrounds, limited props and most often (though not always) in black and white, using lighting and shadow to sculpt and define the features of the subject.
After many years pursuing the photographic hobby in a variety of styles, Graham and his assistant, and wife, Louise are setting up a new brand to bring a specific cinematic look to the people of the Midlands.
